The Issue

The residents of Sumter, South Carolina, urgently need your support in opposing the rezoning proposal RZ-25-15m for the property located at 3241 Wedgefield Rd. The proposal seeks to change the zoning from residential (R15) to general commercial (GC) to pave the way for the construction of another Dollar General store.

There are compelling reasons to resist this rezoning. Our community already has three Dollar General stores within a 2.5-mile radius of the proposed location. This is excessive for any neighborhood, leading to diminishing returns both economically and socially. The presence of yet another store could flood the market, negatively impacting existing local businesses and reducing the potential economic benefits anticipated from this development.

Moreover, this rezoning does not align with the established residential character of Wedgefield Rd. Changing this to commercial property directly threatens the tranquil, residential nature that attracted many of the area’s residents in the first place. This encroachment on residential zones can erode property values, making it harder for families to invest in their homes and further develop the community.

Another critical concern is the increase in traffic and the safety hazards it presents. The area is not equipped to handle the kind of commercial traffic a Dollar General store is likely to attract. Increased congestion and the higher risk of accidents pose significant safety challenges, particularly for families with young children and elderly residents.

In response to these concerns, residents unanimously voiced their opposition at the first reading, showcasing our community spirit and common vision for the neighborhood. However, we need further support to ensure our voices are heard and respected. We suggest focusing commercial developments in areas already zoned for such purposes, thus preserving our community's integrity while encouraging economic growth in designated commercial zones.

Your support is crucial to protect our neighborhood and ensure the continued well-being and prosperity of Sumter's residents. Please sign this petition to stop the rezoning and safeguard our community's future.
