Stop the word of the day in Mr. Burke's ELA class
The Issue
In Mr. Burke's English Language Arts (ELA) class, we are required to present a 'word of the day' at the start of each lesson. While the intention is to broaden our vocabulary, the current implementation of this exercise is creating unnecessary stress and is not serving its intended educational purpose.
Many students feel pressured to come up with unique, complicated words that add more stress rather than benefit. It defeats the purpose of learning and creates an environment focused more on competition than collaboration. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, academic stress can adversely affect students' well-being and overall performance. The goal of education should be to enhance learning and support student development, but this activity seems to achieve the opposite effect.
Moreover, every student learns differently, and vocabulary building should accommodate these varying learning styles. The one-size-fits-all daily word presentation doesn't engage all students effectively and misses the diversity in learning preferences, which is crucial for effective education at Tappan Middle School.
As a solution, we suggest implementing more effective and inclusive methods for vocabulary expansion that consider diverse learning preferences. Options like interactive group activities, engaging reading sessions, or digital vocabulary tools could be explored. These alternatives would likely reduce stress while improving vocabulary knowledge more effectively than the current required presentation.
We believe that Mr. Burke, as a dedicated educator, wants the best outcomes for his students. This change will not only support academic growth but also contribute to a more positive classroom environment. We urge the school administration and Mr. Burke to reconsider the current approach and replace the 'word of the day' ritual with more engaging and less stressful methods.
Help us create a learning environment that truly supports every student's growth. Please sign this petition to make a positive change in Mr. Burke's ELA class.
