The issue
Gippsland Water is seeking community feedback on the prospect of a wind farm in Dutson Downs, Victoria.
Gippsland Water is trying to save operating costs without considering the environmental costs to flora and fauna, or the well-being of local residents and custodians.
Concerns raised include:
- Impacts to the local flora and fauna
- Property values decreasing
- Noise pollution. A Flinders University report states that the sound can be heard almost 9km away. Report link below.
- Effects of Infrasound
- Wind Turbines cannot be recycled
- Wind Turbines and transmission lines can catch fire and is located in a bushfire prone area is of serious concern
- Dutson Downs is located extremely close to wildlife reserves, they include Dowd Morass Wildlife Reserve, Heart Morass Wildlife Reserve, and Lake Coleman West Wildlife Reserve.
- Impacts to Indigenous customs and values
- Affect to the beautiful scenery
- Affect on tourism and hospitality
- Affect on local businesses
- Affect on local residents and our current lifestyle.
- Potential overseas investors owning or taking control of the Wind Farm.
- The cost of construction and installation.
- The cost of the production of the materials required for construction.
- The cost of demolition and disposal leaving slabs of 2 metre thick concrete the size of house blocks all over the country.
- The cost of the kilometres of transmission lines and towers required to connect the turbines to the existing power grid.
- Would consumers ever see downward pressure on their bills, and when would that be?
