We, the undersigned call on Wicklow County Council to stop the implementation of its new rent scheme, due to take effect on 3rd October 2026, and undertake an urgent assessment of its impact on tenants and families across the county.

We are concerned about the very significant rent increases many council tenants are facing, with some households reporting increases of more than 100%, despite household incomes remaining static since the previous rent review.

People are already under huge financial pressure due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. 

The rising costs of food, fuel, gas and electricity are placing enormous pressure on household budgets, and significant rent increases will push many into serious financial difficulty.

Many tenants are already living in overcrowded, mouldy or damp conditions, and are now being asked to absorb substantial increases in their weekly rent.

The short window between tenants receiving notification and the scheme taking effect is also a major concern.

We therefore call on Wicklow County Council to stop these rent increases, carry out a proper impact assessment, and engage meaningfully with tenants.

Council tenants deserve stability and support, not measures that increase financial pressure on already struggling households.
