The Issue

At Franklin County High School, there's a practice in place that's causing immense discomfort and distress for many students – it's called the Student Learning Center, or SLC. However, among students and parents alike, it has garnered a notorious nickname: "the white room torture."

Imagine being isolated in a stark, featureless white room for hours on end with minimal human interaction. For many students, this is a painful reality they face daily. Those who are sent to the SLC describe it as an isolating experience that instills a deep sense of anxiety and discomfort, rather than the supportive and enriching educational environment that schools are meant to provide.

No child should feel like they're being punished or mentally drained in a place meant for learning and growth. People often associate schools with safety, friendships, and the opportunity to thrive. Still, the conditions in the SLC at Franklin County High School contradict these fundamental principles. Students are subjected to an environment that can be emotionally numbing and mentally exhausting, leading to distress symptoms that have long-lasting effects on their educational and personal lives.

Research has shown the negative impacts of isolation and sensory deprivation on mental health, suggesting that a prolonged exposure to such environments can lead to severe anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. No educational institution should endorse practices that can jeopardize the mental well-being of its students.

The solution is straightforward: Franklin County High School should eliminate the use of the SLC or, at the very least, reform its practices to ensure they are nurturing and supportive rather than punitive and distressing. School should be a welcoming environment for everyone, conducive to positive learning experiences and personal growth.

By signing this petition, you can help bring attention to the dire need for change at Franklin County High School. Together, we can advocate for an educational environment where all students have the right to feel safe and supported. Let us stand united against the "white room torture" and ensure our schools live up to their promise of being safe havens for learning and development. Please, sign and share this petition to protect our students and foster a healthier learning atmosphere.
