The Issue

We believe Vineland Public Schools should reconsider the student phone ban because students deserve to have a safe and reliable way to communicate with their parents and guardians when it matters most. If a student is being bullied, feels unsafe, becomes sick, or faces an unexpected situation, being able to contact a parent can provide immediate support and reassurance. Taking away every student’s phone also takes away an important line of communication between families and their children. Teachers are trusted to carry their phones, so why shouldn’t students be trusted to have theirs responsibly? We understand that phones can be distracting, but completely banning them punishes responsible students for the actions of a few. Most students are not going to risk their grades and education just to be on their phones during class. Instead of a complete ban, the school should create reasonable rules that require phones to be put away during instruction while still allowing students to access them when there is a legitimate need. This petition is not about giving students unlimited phone access, it is about safety, communication, trust, and giving students a reasonable choice in situations that affect them. We deserve to be heard, and we deserve a policy that protects us without completely cutting off our ability to reach our families. Please sign my petition to urge the Vineland Board of Education to reconsider and revise the phone ban in a way that addresses both educational potential and safety for all students.
