Kangaroos are Not Pet Food.
PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW TO STOP THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A KANGAROO ABBATOIR IN INGLEWOOD VICTORIA
Current Plans by the Loddon Shire Council to finalise plans and grant Campaspe Meat Company a permit to operate a Kangaroo abbatoir in the old Inglewood site should be strongly opposed. The development of a processing facility can only encourage the inhumane and cruel exploitation of Kangaroos for body parts and flesh even further
The “Harvest” of Kangaroo body parts and flesh for the European and local human consumption market has long been a significant issue for many who value our iconic Kangaroo. This led to a Parliamentary Inquiry in New South Wales in 2021 challenging claims Kangaroo populations are out of control to justify the ongoing “harvesting”
Evidence led by ecologists and scientists who specialise in mathematical modelling and population surveys, are saying that population number calculations misrepresent the actual numbers of Kangaroos and in fact some species of Kangaroos are facing extinction due to the ongoing culls. Strong evidence was also led about the inherant cruelty attached to the culling.
Claims have been made for many years that Kangaroo culling has hallmarks of cruelty and inhumane treatment as shooting takes place at night under spotlights. Nothing has changed. Kangaroos are found in daylight with their jaws blown apart left to suffer and die in the most cruel manner. Joeys will often flee dying long protracted deaths as they will be unable to drink from their mother. It is a cruel and inhumane industry and one that must be stopped.
There is also the issue of how such an industry was ever given the green light under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Control Act, a piece of Legislation designed for the protection and conservation of native wildlife and habitat.
International focus is upon the Australian Kangaroo harvesting industry as far as the United States which country will no longer support the importation of Kangaroo skins to make soccer balls and shoes.
There are strong National calls for an end to ongoing shooting of Kangaroos for both the pet food industry and human consumption, amid claims it is an inappropriate exploitation of native wildlife. It has been argued, the indigenous first nations never farmed native wildlife, and nor should we who are not indigenous. For most indigenous the Kangaroo is a spiritual totem animal and Kangaroos must be respected.
Current Plans by the Loddon Shire Council to install a Kangaroo abbatoir in the old Inglewood abattoir should be strongly opposed. The development of a processing facility can only encourage this inhumane and cruel exploitation even further.
Please write to the Loddon Shire Council. The facility at the Inglewood abbatoir is not yet operating. If you care about our environment and our native wildlife please write to the Mayor and all Councillors and voice your concerns to this project moving ahead within the Loddon Shire Council.
