Families across our state are opening their Rhode Island Energy bills and seeing charges so high that they are being forced to choose between heat, food, rent, and medicine. Seniors on fixed incomes, working families, and small business owners are being pushed to the brink.

This is not normal.

This is not sustainable.

And this is not acceptable.

Despite repeated warnings and public testimony, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has continued to approve rate increases, allowing utility costs to spiral out of control. Rhode Islanders have shown up, written in, and begged for relief — yet the rates keep rising.

Now the cost of basic electricity and heating has become a statewide crisis.

We call for an independent investigation into the dramatic and unexplained increase in utility costs, including:

Why electric and heating bills have more than tripled for many Rhode Islanders
How Rhode Island Energy’s rates are being calculated and approved
The role of the Public Utilities Commission in allowing these increases
Whether corporate profits are being prioritized over public welfare
Whether consumers are being unfairly overcharged.

This investigation must be independent, transparent, and publicly released.

Electricity and heat are not optional — they are basic necessities. No family should be afraid of losing power or freezing in their home because regulators and corporations failed to protect the public.

Rhode Island is already one of the most expensive states to live in. These skyrocketing utility bills are forcing people into debt, eviction, and impossible choices.

The people spoke. We warned. We showed up.

And we were ignored.

Now we demand accountability.

We demand that state leadership:

Immediately freeze any further rate increases
Launch an independent investigation
Hold Rhode Island Energy and the PUC accountable
Provide full transparency to the public
