I'm a resident of a peaceful apartment complex where my husband, two young boys, and I have found a great joy in watching the beautiful pigeons that regularly visit our surroundings. It's become a beloved family activity, and I know many of my neighbors feel the same way. However, our apartment management has decided to employ trained falconers to control the pigeon population by killing them, an action that seems excessively cruel and unnecessary given the peaceful co-existence we've shared with these birds.

The use of falconers to cull pigeons is not just detrimental to the birds, but it also disrupts our community's ecosystem and eliminates a simple pleasure for many families here. Moreover, studies have shown that such aggressive population control methods often fail in the long term. Pigeon populations tend to bounce back due to their natural reproductive habits, making these methods not just inhumane, but also ineffective.

In other communities, humane and efficient methods have been successfully employed to manage pigeon populations without resorting to lethal measures. For example, using deterrents like netting, spikes, or reflective materials can discourage pigeons from roosting in strategic areas. Implementing these simple interventions would allow us to manage pigeon numbers while respecting their right to exist and maintaining the enjoyment they bring to families like mine.

Furthermore, it's important for us to be mindful of the message we're sending to our children about how we treat the animals that share our environment. Teaching them empathy and coexistence is crucial for fostering a kind and balanced community. Witnessing the violent removal of these birds is counterproductive to that message.
