Stop the use of AI in school student council (and across the general student body)

The Issue

There is an unfair standard for students at Norman North High School concerning artificial intelligence use.

Regardless of what differing opinions say, generative AI can be used as an educational tool (even if it isn’t optimal.) Yet, students are punished if they are caught using it in any, way, shape, or form.

So, why are we, as students and administrators, allowing our student council to use the tools that have been prohibited from the general school population?

At a school with advanced leadership, philanthropy, and opportunity, we should thrive to bridge gaps between abilities that students with positions of power have with those who don’t. This is why stopping the use of generative AI entirely is important. If the general student body can’t use AI, student leadership shouldn’t be able to either.

Utilizing AI in a creative context, like using it to make t-shirts, goes against the principles that certain committees and groups advocate for: authenticity and student involvement. Having AI perform these duties strips student artists, planners, and organizers from potential experiences, opportunities, and projects.

At a school where “everyone’s voice will be heard,” we should encourage our administrative and student council to represent the general population. Because using AI goes against current students’ (and alumni’s’) wishes, we ought to speak up and ask for greater respect, representation, and transparency.
