Stop the Unnecessary Slaughter of Healthy Feral Cats at Frere Hospital

The Issue

As a worker at Frere Hospital in East London, I've come to know and appreciate the community of sterilised feral cats that live on our grounds. Sadly, their lives are threatened by the CEO's belief that they are merely a nuisance. This petition calls on the CEO to acknowledge the value these cats provide and halt their extermination. Contrary to the misinformation, these cats are not a source of disruption but of balance. Feral cats help control the rodent population and their absence would not result in a cat-free environment, but rather invite new, unsterilised and potentially ill cats to occupy the area - thus creating a cycle of endless breeding. According to the South African Veterinary Association, sterilised feral cats present far less of a health risk to humans and other animals than do random, non-sterilised cat populations. The indiscriminate extermination of these cats is not only harmful for the ecosystem but it's also morally troubling. I plead to the CEO to revise this decision and to the public to voice their concern. Together, we can protect these feral cats and ensure Frere Hospital remains a place of care and kindness for all creatures. Please, sign this petition.
