Whatever we the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland think of the decade of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, that escalated into war in 2022, it is clear that the recent UK Government decision to allow UK-funded weapons to be deployed in Russian territory would be to declare de facto war on Russia. UK involvement in this war would result in the destruction of the flower of our youth, especially of the economically vulnerable forced into the military for want of other options, as well as massive destruction of our already failing economy. The UK is particularly vulnerable due to the proliferation of US nuclear arms and UK nuclear reactors which if targeted would cause civilian casualties and destruction of infrastructure on a scale that can only be described as apocalyptic. Mindful of our right to life and of our duty to preserve this land and the traditions of all of its people for future generations, we the undersigned call on the UK Government and devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to prevent such a declaration, overt or covert; to stop funding or supplying arms to further this foreign conflict; and to support sensible diplomatic initiatives to bring this cause of immense suffering and death to an end.
