The Issue

For over 30 years, emotional support cats have been a lifeline for me and many others in the disabled community. The Trump administration's proposed changes to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations threaten to strip away this essential support network. Thousands of disabled citizens like myself rely on the companionship of emotional support animals (ESAs) not just for comfort, but for survival. These animals play a crucial role in our mental and emotional wellness, often bridging the gap between despair and hope.

HUD’s proposed changes could mean the repeal of current ESA letters and an end to the issuance of new ones, effectively denying us this fundamental support. Emotional support animals have proven time and again to provide invaluable assistance in navigating daily challenges—they are not mere pets but life companions that help many of us maintain our independence and improve our quality of life.

According to the National Institute of Health, the presence of an ESA can lead to decreased stress levels, lower blood pressure, and can even aid in alleviating symptoms of mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. Disorderly changes to the regulation that oversees ESA could set a dangerous precedent that may leave many vulnerable, leading to an escalation in health crises among disabled individuals.

We understand the need to regulate for the welfare of both people and animals, but this measure shouldn’t come at the expense of those who rely on their ESAs for basic mental health survival. Instead, let’s work towards a policy that ensures the welfare of ESAs while maintaining their invaluable support to those in need.

We urge the Trump administration to reconsider this decision and to maintain the current regulations that allow disabled citizens to have their emotional support animals. Join us in protecting this essential support network.

Please sign this petition to ensure emotional support animals remain a critical lifeline for thousands of disabled individuals who depend on them every day.
