Stop the Trump Administration from drilling for oil off the California coast.

The Issue

The Trump administration is trying everything it can to resume offshore oil drilling in Santa Barbara and open up the rest of the California coast to new drilling leases. Drilling for oil off the California coast will not lower gas prices at the pump. It is not worth the potential environmental destruction and acceleration of the climate crisis.

The Trump administration is using the conflict in Iran, a war that the majority of Americans do not support, as an excuse to restart oil drilling on the California coast.  Trump recently signed an executive order invoking the 1950 Defense Production Act, an emergency act dating back to the Cold War, in an effort to restart the Santa Barbara oil pipeline. This pipeline ruptured in 2015 and sent 100,000 gallons of crude oil into the beautiful California coastal ecosystem. If restarted, the Santa Barbara facilities would only produce 50,000 gallons of oil per day, which is 0.25% of the 20 million that is held up daily by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Not only is this a drop in the bucket, "Americans will see no direct price benefit from a limited increase in domestic oil output, [because] U.S. oil is sold to the highest bidder worldwide and not at a discount for Americans. When crude oil prices rise, American crude oil sells at the same elevated global price" (Harter, 2026).
