STOP the Transformation of Burswood Park into a Motor Sport Street Circuit

STOP the Transformation of Burswood Park into a Motor Sport Street Circuit
The issue
On January 12, 2025, the WA Premier, The Honourable Roger Cook MLA announced plans to transform Burswood Park into a Motor Sport Street Circuit if the WA Labor Government is re-elected.
On 8 March they were re-elected, and are now intent on proceeding with this multi-million-dollar proposal (estimated in the vicinity of $217.5M) which will not only disrupt the natural harmony of the park and wildlife who call Burswood home, it will also impact on the lives and wellbeing of all those who live and reside locally and in the surrounding areas, as well as recreational users (cyclists, pedestrians, and many sporting and community groups).
Burswood Park is a cherished sanctuary, home to diverse wildlife and a peaceful retreat for the local community. The proposed motor sport events will cause irreversible damage to the park’s delicate ecosystem - disrupting lakes, harming trees, and endangering the wildlife that depends on this space for survival. Many species of birds live here, from ducks and pelicans to the iconic black swan, as well as long-neck tortoises.
The noise pollution alone, from high-speed vehicles racing through the area, will disturb both animals and residents, leading to stress, health risks, and potential displacement. Initial concept drawings are proposing building the development within 100 metres of apartments and homes where people currently live!
In addition to the environmental toll, this development will exacerbate the traffic congestion in the area. The influx of spectators, participants, and increased vehicular movement would overwhelm infrastructure, causing greater delays, pollution, and safety hazards. For residents who already face the pressures of urban living, this would make an already difficult situation worse.
At a time when our community faces urgent issues—such as the need for upgraded hospitals, improved healthcare services, homelessness, housing affordability, and the rising cost of living—this proposal seems misplaced. We cannot prioritise a motor sport circuit over the fundamental needs of the greater community.
We need your help!
Please help us send a message to the WA Labor Government to reconsider this ill-advised plan and choose a more suitable location for any motor sport events—one that does not compromise the integrity of Burswood Park or its surrounding infrastructure. This park is a vital natural space that deserves protection, not destruction.
