Jill Faber, the Assistant Attorney General of the State of New York, would investigate Hudson Valley Foie Gras for animal cruelty IF there is an indication from New Yorkers that they consider foie gras unnecessarily cruel.

Hudson Valley Foie Gras operates a foie gras factory in the State of New York even though the laws of the State of New York make the torture or maiming of any animal (including a farm animal) a criminal act under Section 353 of the Agriculture Law (Article 26).
There is no way to produce foie gras without torture: imagine having excessive amounts of food forced down your throat by a pipe several times a day every day until your internal organs swelled. Force feeding excessive quantities of food is “torture” under Section 353 of New York Law. Causing an internal organ to increase beyond its normal size is “maiming” under Section 353.
To produce “foie gras” (the French term means “fatty liver”), workers ram pipes down the throats of male ducks twice each day, pumping up to 2.2 pounds of grain and fat into their stomachs, or geese three times a day, up to 4 pounds daily, in a process known as “gavage.” The force-feeding causes the birds’ livers to swell to up to 10 times their normal size. Many birds have difficulty standing because their engorged livers distend their abdomens, and they may tear out their own feathers and attack each other out of stress.
