The Issue

The Western Ghats have always been my sanctuary—a place of breathtaking beauty and serenity where nature thrives untouched. Known as the 'Breath of the State and Country,' this biodiversity hotspot is home to countless species of flora and fauna, some not found anywhere else on Earth. For years, it has been a refuge for those seeking solace and a deeper connection with the natural world. But now, this cherished ecosystem is under threat.

The proposed Torent project at Bhimashankar poses a significant risk to the delicate balance of life here. Despite its potential for economic benefits, the project threatens to strip away the very essence of what makes the Western Ghats so vital. Evidence from similar developments has shown that such projects lead to deforestation, habitat destruction, and the displacement of many species, including endangered ones. Reports suggest that the depletion of forests due to such projects contributes significantly to climate change, further endangering the livelihood of local communities and wildlife.

Bhimashankar is lauded as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, making it not only a natural haven but also a sacred site. Disruption caused by large-scale projects could mar its sacred and ecological sanctity. The unique combination of rich biodiversity and cultural heritage here is irreplaceable, and once lost, it may never be recovered.

We are not against development, but it must be sustainable. Alternatives like eco-tourism and community-based projects can provide economic growth without sacrificing the environment. By preserving the forest and encouraging sustainable practices, we not only protect biodiversity but also secure the future for local communities that rely on these resources for a living.

The government and decision-makers have a moral obligation to protect these critical ecosystems that provide clean air, water, and climate regulation not just for the region, but for the entire country. We must act to prevent the irreversible damage that the Torent project threatens to inflict on Bhimashankar and the Western Ghats.

I urge you to sign this petition to stop the Torent project and save Bhimashankar. Let us work together to ensure that our children and grandchildren can inherit a healthy and thriving planet. Sign now to make your voice heard for the future of our forests and our lives.
