The Issue

I have lived in Mount Etna, Indiana for over 20 years, and I am deeply concerned about the proposed Tax Increment Financing (TIF) boundary in our community. Mount Etna is a small, close-knit town with a rich history and a unique character that many of us cherish deeply. This proposed TIF boundary threatens to disrupt the fabric of our town by reallocating public resources that are essential for our community's well-being.

Tax Increment Financing is often pitched as a tool for economic development, yet in many small towns like ours, it can lead to more harm than good. According to a report by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, TIF districts tend to divert vital funds away from crucial public services like schools, emergency services, and infrastructure maintenance. In Mount Etna, where our local schools are already underfunded, this reallocation could have devastating impacts on the quality of education and public safety.

Historically, TIF projects have fallen short of their promises. Studies from the University of Chicago and Harvard University have indicated that TIF boundaries often do not deliver the economic growth they promise. Instead, they can create financial burdens on small communities by diverting resources away from critical public services.

Most importantly, the citizens of Mount Etna were not adequately consulted in the decision-making process regarding this TIF boundary. Transparency and community involvement are vital in any decision that impacts the long-term future of our town. We demand that our voices be heard and considered in a public forum before any decisions are made.

I urge the Mount Etna Town Council and the relevant local authorities to halt the implementation of this TIF boundary immediately. Instead of implementing potentially harmful financial districts, let's focus on community-driven development plans that genuinely consider our town's needs and priorities.

Please stand with us to protect the integrity and future of Mount Etna by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for a future that respects our community's values and ensures sustainable growth for all residents.
