Stop the Theft: Hold Meta & AI Developers Accountable for Using Pirated Books from Library
The Issue
Meta and other AI developers have been caught using pirated books from Library Genesis (LibGen)—a well-known piracy website—to train their AI models. This includes stolen work from indie authors, small presses, and traditionally published writers.
We, the global book community, demand justice, transparency, and protection for the authors whose creative work was exploited without consent or compensation.
We, the readers, authors, publishers, and supporters of the literary world, are outraged by the recent revelations that Meta Platforms, Inc. and other AI developers have used pirated books sourced from Library Genesis (LibGen) to train their artificial intelligence systems.
This is not innovation—it is exploitation.
Thousands of books from across all genres—romance, fantasy, dark academia, thriller, horror, and spicy smut—have been stolen from creators and used without permission or payment. Among those affected are numerous independent, small press, and marginalized authors, who depend on every sale and KU page read to survive in an already challenging market.
This theft of intellectual property is not only unethical, it is illegal.
We Demand the Following:
- Immediate removal of all pirated books from any and all AI training datasets.
- Full transparency from Meta and all AI developers about the sources used in dataset creation.
- Direct financial compensation to authors whose work was exploited.
- Clear industry-wide reform and regulation to prevent future unauthorized use of literary works in AI training.
- Commitment to ethical AI training practices that respect author rights, royalties, and copyright law.
Why This Matters:
Storytelling is not free to steal.
Authors are not data fodder.
Books are sacred.
And creative labor deserves respect—not corporate exploitation.
When billion-dollar tech companies build AI on stolen words, they dismantle the very foundation of literature. The publishing world deserves better, and we will not be silent.
