The Issue

Over the past weeks, the film students at Miller Career & Technology Center have been informed that their principal, Ms. Kelley Kirila, has been working on plans to cut the film program at Miller entirely. This action was solely authorized by Ms. Kirila. Her decision is motivated by a desire to improve Miller’s enrollment figures, and since the film program has the lowest enrollment figures, she asserts that its removal is in the school's best interest. This counterproductive action has raised significant concerns among students, staff, and parents, as it undermines the hard work and dedication that many students have put into this field.

The Film Program at Miller Career & Technology Center is the district's sole industry-based film program, educating and empowering students to create high-quality work. Its hands-on nature allows students to work with real clients, produce promotional videos for the school district, work as official Katy-ISD employees, and generate awareness with local and state sponsors. This program has been a gateway for students to learn valuable life skills, explore career options, and express their creative abilities. Ms. Kirila's plans to cut the program entirely will have a significant impact on our community and those students aspiring to join the film program.

By signing this petition, you will help us demonstrate to the Katy-ISD School Board the program's profound value to students and the community, and the widespread opposition to its termination. Your signature has the power to make a difference. Together, we can make our voices heard. Please, sign this petition to stop this unjust infringement on the vibrancy of our community and students’ education.
