Stop the taxation of pet health services in Quebec

Stop the taxation of pet health services in Quebec
The Issue
Imagine watching your beloved pet suffer from a chronic illness and knowing that each visit to the veterinarian, which should be solely about their health and wellbeing, is also clouded by the worry of increasing taxes. I, like many pet owners in Quebec, face this burden every time my pet requires medical attention. Quebec's government imposes a 9.975% Quebec Sales Tax (QST) in addition to the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% on veterinary visits and other pet health services. This additional financial strain is substantial and unnecessary.
Pets, akin to family members, often become an integral part of our lives. They bring joy, companionship, and even emotional support. For many, providing optimal care for their pets is a non-negotiable aspect of their lives. However, these expenses, inflated by taxes, can deter pet owners from seeking timely or routine medical attention, ultimately impacting the health and quality of life of our pets. Pet health and welfare should be a priority, not taxable income.
Veterinary services are essential and should be regarded equally important to human healthcare. Just as prescriptions and certain medical services for humans are exempt from taxes, similar measures should apply to animal healthcare. Removing taxes from pet health-related services would alleviate some of the financial pressure faced by pet owners, allowing them to invest more thoughtfully in their pet’s well-being without the looming anxiety of exorbitant bills.
Statistics show that approximately 57% of Canadian households own pets, with a significant portion located in Quebec. This means that a considerable number of Quebecers are affected by these taxes. As the number of pet adoptions continues to rise, the burden of these taxes becomes even more pressing. We require immediate government intervention to address this growing concern.
I urge the Quebec government to recognize the importance of pet healthcare and remove these burdensome taxes. Our pets deserve quality healthcare without financial barriers threatening their owners' ability to provide for them. Sign this petition to ask the Quebec government to exempt veterinary visits and pet health services from provincial and federal taxes. Let's stand together for the welfare of our pets.
