We have started this petition to demand action from Colorado representatives Senator John Hickenlooper, Senator Michael Bennet, and Jason Crow (CO-06) in light of their response to the Israel-Palestine conflict. These three representatives have openly expressed support for Israel without acknowledging the safety concerns of their Palestinian-American constituents as Islamophobia continues to rise in the US. 

Additionally, many influential politicians, including President Joe Biden, have made misleading comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict, further perpetuating hate towards Palestinians. We need to hold our government responsible for such actions, especially as the US is negotiating billions of dollars of aid to Israel. 

We have drafted the following letter demanding that these representatives take an active stance on reducing misinformation spread by the government while committing to protect all Americans, regardless of religion, political beliefs, or ethnic background. Dear  Senator Bennet, Senator Hickenlooper, And Representative Crow,

We, the citizens of Colorado, are writing to express our deep concern regarding misinformation surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict and the implications of the United States’ role in the contentious issue. As concerned constituents, we believe our elected representatives must address these issues openly and responsibly.

First and foremost, we acknowledge efforts to regulate the spread of misinformation through social media companies. While this is essential, it is equally important to acknowledge the misinformation disseminated by our own U.S. government. Major leaders have echoed unverified claims surrounding the conflict, including President Biden. On October 11, 2023, President Biden stated, “I never really thought that I would see and have confirmed pictures of terrorists beheading children,” a largely unverified claim.

Such false narratives have grave consequences. Misinformation perpetuated by influential leaders is amplified through social media platforms. Left unacknowledged, it continues to circulate, creating a divisive and hostile environment. We urge you and your fellow senators to speak consciously about the conflict and openly acknowledge unverified claims propagated by government entities.

In addition, we are apprehensive regarding diplomacy with Israel in the context of misinformation. As the White House seeks to allocate more funding to Israel, all claims made by Israel must be verified. As the Ahli Arab Hospital controversy ensues, we urge the United States government to discern the truth. We will not allow the United States government to expend our tax dollars on the loss of innocent civilians. We demand that the government prioritize fact-based diplomacy and decision-making in international relations.

Furthermore, we want to ensure the safety of Palestinian-Americans. In light of recent hate-crimes, it has become a dire issue. While you have openly expressed your support for the Jewish community, Palestinian-Americans deserve the same assurances. We ask you to take proactive steps to protect the well-being of all Americans, regardless of background. Our nation prides itself on diversity; therefore, we must stand against discriminatory violence directed at any community in the United States.

Ultimately, we respectfully request that you, as our representative, take a principled stance on these issues. Acknowledging and addressing misinformation, verifying claims related to Israel, and ensuring the safety of Palestinian-Americans are essential to upholding the values of our democracy. We appreciate your dedication to public service and trust that you will consider our concerns. Thank you for your attention to these matters, and we look forward to hearing about your efforts to address such pressing matters.
