The Issue

As a landowner and hunter in the Peace Country of Alberta, I have watched with increasing concern as our elk populations are systematically decimated due to unsustainable hunting practices. For the past four years, the government of Alberta has issued a staggering 34,592 antlerless elk tags across Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 527, 526, 522, and 523. This rampant issuance of tags is not just a number; it represents a profound threat to the ecological balance of our region.

The continual hunting of elk throughout the winter months subjects these herds to undue stress at a time when they should be conserving energy to survive the harsh conditions. Instead, they are fending off hunters, which disrupts their natural behaviors and can lead to a significant decrease in population numbers. The impact of overhunting is evident as year after year, the sightings of these majestic creatures dwindle.

Our current management strategies are failing, and without change, the elk herds in the Peace Country may never recover, robbing future generations of both the natural beauty and cultural heritage that these animals represent. It's imperative that the government of Alberta reassesses its current wildlife management policies to implement a more sustainable approach to elk tagging.

Possible solutions include reducing the number of antlerless elk tags issued, particularly during critical winter months, and investing in comprehensive studies to better understand elk population dynamics and habitat requirements. Additionally, collaborating with local wildlife experts, hunters, and landowners can lead to more effective and community-supported management policies.

We must act now to preserve these herds not just for current enjoyment, but for the ecological health of our region and for those who come after us. Let us stand together with local farmers to insist on a thoughtful, sustainable approach to wildlife management in the Peace Country.

Please sign this petition to urge the Alberta government to reconsider its current elk management strategy and to work towards ensuring the survival and flourishing of our elk herds for generations to come.
