Stop the Slaughter… Protect Decatur’s air, water, health, and quality of life

The Issue

I-O Properties, based in Ohio, is seeking to repurpose the former Dean dairy manufacturing facility located at 400 South Chamber Drive. I-O Properties intends to convert the facility into a commercial cattle slaughterhouse. The approval of a slaughterhouse in the intended location would require an amendment to city ordinance §130.02 which states, “No person within the city shall slaughter or dress out any animal. It shall be unlawful for any person to carry on the business of slaughtering animals for sale within the city limits or to keep or maintain a slaughterhouse within the city limits.”

This ordinance is in place to protect Decatur’s quality of life. A slaughterhouse business can bring issues with our wastewater treatment and supply, odor, and the possibility of decreased property values.

We believe Decatur, Indiana is capable of so much more. We deserve employers that align with our community’s values and quality of life.

Say no to:

-          Decreased property values

-          Environmental contamination

-          Increased taxes to offset increased infrastructure need

-          A smelly town

-          Increased local crime rates

-          A quick fix when our community deserves better

If you are a resident of Decatur, Indiana please sign the petition and ask City Council to uphold the current city ordinance and say no to the slaughterhouse.
