Senior Scientist Says Catalina Deer and Rare Plants Can Co-Exist, but Conservancy Persists in Plan to Slaughter All Deer

DAMNING INTERNAL DOCUMENT – Our Public Records Request has turned up an internal communication the Catalina Island Conservancy (CIC) doesn’t want you to see! It exposes the Conservancy’s long-term obsession with eradicating Catalina’s deer despite the scientific data that shows that deer and rare plants have for more than 100 years and can continue to co-exist on the island! 

There had been a fire on the island. CIC saw an opportunity to justify eradicating the deer to "prevent erosion" and other claims. They sent an “emergency request” to the California Department of Fish and Game (now Wildlife). After a site visit to Catalina Island, Kimberly McKee Lewis, Senior Environmental Scientist for the agency, wrote in an internal memo:

“The 'emergency' CIC describes is not related to deer.”

She went on to write:

“The current habitat condition throughout the island is a result of centuries of livestock damage to soil and vegetation NOT deer browsing.”

Lewis went on to rate ALL Conservancy’s claims for eradicating the deer as “Not demonstrated” and “False pretense.”
