Despite their storied past and the legal protections granted to them, America’s wild mustangs are under grave threat from the very system designed to safeguard them.

In 1971, the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was enacted by Congress, ensuring that these animals were acknowledged as the "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit". This Act was a promise to preserve these wild creatures on public lands, yet today, they face an insidious danger: the loophole that allows them to be funneled into slaughter pipelines.

Slaughter is not the fate these animals deserve. Instead of roaming free as icons of American culture and history, many are caught in a legal ambiguity that leads them to their deaths. Despite the existence of regulations intended to protect them, the reality is that a significant number of mustangs disappear into this pipeline, ending up in slaughterhouses rather than the wild pastures of their birthright.

The issue is urgent. According to the Humane Society of the United States, tens of thousands of American horses are sent to slaughter each year, a process facilitated by loopholes and lax enforcement of existing laws. Not only does this practice destroy a part of our national heritage, but it also operates contrary to the ethical treatment and dignity that these creatures, like all living beings, deserve.

We propose closing these loopholes and improving the enforcement of the existing Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. This could include stringent penalties for those caught sending mustangs to slaughter and better tracking systems for these horses once they are adopted from government holding facilities. Additionally, investing in humane management practices like fertility control could help curb the overpopulation issue without resorting to lethal means.
