Vicksburg Community Schools just took a step too far. Beginning this school year, Vicksburg High School students are being forced to place their phones in RFID-equipped, signal-blocking pouches during class. While the district claims this is about reducing distractions, many parents and students are deeply concerned about what this really means for safety, trust, and autonomy.

This isn't just about phones—it’s about communication, privacy, and respect.

Emergencies can happen at any moment, and these bags cut off students' ability to reach family immediately. What if there’s an emergency at home? What if a student feels unsafe? A signal-blocking pouch could delay access to help. The school says students can use phones during lunch and passing time—but that’s not always enough. And for many families, phone access isn’t just convenience—it’s peace of mind.

We all want students to stay focused in class. But this isn’t the solution. Enforcing digital discipline through tech that literally blocks communication sets a dangerous precedent. It sends a message that students can’t be trusted and must be controlled rather than supported. It may even create more tension and rebellion, not less distraction.

The district spent over $7,000 on these pouches—money that could have gone toward mental health support, academic resources, or programs that build real connection between students and teachers.

We’re asking Vicksburg Community Schools Superintendent Kevin O’Neill and the VCS Board to reverse this decision. Instead of signal-blocking bags, invest in strategies that foster student responsibility and mutual respect. Partner with parents. Trust students to learn how to manage their devices—not just punish them for having one.

Don’t lock students out of their own lives to enforce silence. Give them the tools and the trust to succeed.
