The Issue

This Petition has been created by students and alumni of the EAP Program at George Brown College. We need your help.

George Brown College is shutting down its English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program — and with it, a lifeline for thousands of newcomers, immigrants, and refugees who built their futures here.

This program is not just about English.

It’s about opportunity. It’s about confidence. It’s about belonging.

The EAP program has helped thousands of students begin their education, find work, and integrate into Canadian society. It has welcomed newcomers with open arms — and now, the College is closing the door.

This is more than a financial decision.

It is a social injustice, and a threat to the values we claim to uphold as a country.

💡 Why this program matters for Canada and George Brown College:

  1. It develops skilled, confident newcomers who contribute faster to the economy.
  2. It supports mental health and reduces isolation.
  3. It saves public money long-term by reducing reliance on social services.
  4. It builds social cohesion and multicultural understanding in classrooms.
  5. It strengthens Canada’s global reputation as a welcoming and inclusive nation

This is not just about students. It’s about the kind of College we want to learn in and the kind of country we want to live in.

📣 We call on all former and current students, educators, allies, and future learners to raise your voice.

We ask George Brown College to:

  1. Immediately stop the closure of the EAP program.
  2. Hold open consultations with those most affected.
  3. Protect access to full-time, public, and inclusive English education.

Don’t let GBC turn this essential program into a private luxury only the privileged can afford, and let's remind the College of their core values which include a commitment to learners and learning, equity and belonging, and collaboration and community.

Sign this petition and stand with us to defend education, inclusion, the future of Canada, and the importance of keeping open the door of opportunity that this program provides for newcomers to our community.

Let’s show them what a real community looks like.
