As a resident of Petaluma, I cherish our historic downtown. It is a treasure that reflects our city's rich history and unique character. However, the proposed Housing and Economic Opportunity Overlay threatens this precious heritage. The overlay has been proposed to accommodate the EKN Appellation Hotel on the corner of Petaluma Blvd and B street, which plans to amend our General Plan for their modern 6-story hotel in our historic downtown.

This overlay not only goes against our General Plan but also contradicts current zoning laws designed to preserve and protect Petaluma's historic character. If passed, it will set a dangerous precedent for future developers to build mid-rise buildings in other parts of town.

Our current zoning laws are there for a reason - they ensure that development respects the unique character of different areas within our city. Changing them on behalf of one developer could lead us down a slippery slope where we lose control over what makes Petaluma special.

We must not let short-term economic gains overshadow long-term community values. Our history is worth preserving; it enriches our lives today and leaves an important legacy for future generations.
