The Issue

In the heart of South Myrtle Beach near Murrells Inlet, SC, lie many charming neighborhoods, a community bound not only by its residents but by a shared love for the area's natural beauty and tranquility. Yet, this cherished locality faces an impending threat: the proposed extension of Highway Route 22. This extension would cut directly through some neighborhoods, threatening to displace families and demolish homes through eminent domain. The impact of this proposal won't just end at these neighborhoods. It echoes through the neighboring towns, bringing with it a wave of consequences that will disrupt the day-to-day lives of all of us in South Myrtle Beach, Burgess, Surfside Beach, Garden City and Murrells Inlet.

Anyone familiar with the area knows the story of Highway 31, which added significant traffic woes when introduced. A similar scenario looms large with the Route 22 extension. This project would channel increased traffic onto Route 707 and the Bypass Route 17. These routes are not equipped to handle such an influx, as evidenced by the current congestion at the intersections with Route 707 and Holmestown Road and Route 707 and Bypass Route 17. The daily life experience for residents and commuters alike would be hampered by prolonged travel times, increased pollution, and heightened risk of accidents.

Moreover, this expansion would strip away not just personal properties but take a toll on the local wildlife, tearing through habitats such as the Waccamaw Wildlife Refuge, the Waccamaw river and the Intracoastal Waterway that house diverse species. We cherish these natural surroundings as a part of what makes the greater area unique. Preserving this environment is critical, not only for wildlife but for future generations to have the same privilege of enjoying what we often take for granted.

The Burgess community and parts of Murrells Inlet hold many historical and cultural land and buildings important to the people in the area. This history should be preserved to keep the integrity of the community intact. The importance of future generations to have the local history of this area is equally important to the community.

By voicing our concerns, we implore our town planners and government officials to reconsider this proposal. It is essential to explore alternative solutions that preserve the integrity of our community and environment while addressing traffic concerns.

Join us in safeguarding our homes, our environment, and our way of life. Please sign this petition to oppose the Route 22 extension through neighborhoods and intersecting with route 707 and route 17 bypass and stand in unity with our community. Together, we can ensure that the voices of all surrounding communities are heard loud and clear.

Our objective is to persuade the Army Corp of Engineers and the DOT to pick the least impactful route while not disrupting our neighborhoods and other community resources. There are currently multiple proposed routes which can be viewed at:
