Hundreds of majestic wild horses, symbols of America's untamed spirit, are being captured across the vast landscapes of our nation. Each year, thousands are rounded up and, tragically, many are sold and transported to slaughterhouses, erasing the freedom they've known and robbing our country of its natural heritage.

These wild horses, descendants of those brought by Spanish explorers and celebrated by Native American tribes, deserve to run free. They are an integral part of the ecosystems in which they live, playing a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance. Various studies have shown that wild horses contribute to the health of the land by promoting biodiversity and enhancing soil fertility.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), responsible for managing these herds, claims overpopulation as the reason for these roundups. However, the methods used are inhumane and often result in injury or death. Helicopters chase these animals for miles, causing stress, exhaustion, and sometimes leading to fatal accidents.

Moreover, the population numbers provided by the BLM have been inconsistent and questioned by numerous wildlife experts. Reports indicate that the land allocated for their habitat has been systematically reduced, not because of overpopulation, but to accommodate private livestock interests. Currently, over two million cattle and sheep graze on public lands, significantly outnumbering the wild horses themselves.

There are humane and sustainable alternatives. We urge the implementation of fertility control programs that have proven successful on a smaller scale. Such programs can naturally maintain the wild horse populations without causing them harm. Additionally, expanding the designated areas for these herds can provide them with safe spaces to thrive without coming into conflict with livestock.

We need to stand together to protect these iconic creatures. By stopping the roundups, we preserve their freedom and ensure the ecological health of the lands they inhabit. Let us protect this vital part of our national history and culture.
