The European Parliament is about to vote on whether to halve Europe’s food waste by 2030. This could be the most ambitious agreement on food waste the world has ever seen. And the target would enter into UK law before it leaves the European Union, meaning that it will shape the UK’s approach to food waste even after Brexit. The British Government would need to change the law after Brexit if they want to back down on the commitment. This could be our last chance to get such a strong target embedded in UK law. But at the moment, there’s everything to play for. The targets might be weakened to become voluntary, or to exclude the colossal food waste on farms and factories. This Is Rubbish, the campaigning organisation behind Stop the Rot, has teamed up with Friends of the Earth to launch a new petition taking the food waste fight to Europe, to ensure that Europe commits to halving its food waste from farm to fork in the vote this November.
