This week the Evening Standard launched a great campaign to redistribute more food that would have been wasted to food poverty charities, and increase transparency by supermarkets.
In response, Sainsbury's have now followed Tesco in releasing their food waste figures - 38,767 tonnes of which 7.6% is redistributed to charity.
This is a great step forward! We want the other supermarkets to follow Tesco and Sainsbury's to publish their in-store waste too. We'll start with Morrisons as they're one of the biggest supermarkets not to come clean on their figures yet!

Even more importantly, we need transparency on supermarket supply chains - the Evening Standard league table only focuses on the tiny 0.2 million tonnes of food waste that occurs in supermarket stores, compared to a colossal 4.7 million tonnes in the supply chain.
Congratulate Sainsbury's on releasing these food waste figures, but challenge them to go further and be more transparent about their supply chain food waste!

Congratulations on publishing your in-store food waste of 38,767 tonnes! It's great to see this transparency. But please go further and publish more info about food waste in your supply chains! An estimated 4.7 million tonnes is wasted on farms and in factories, before it even gets to the supermarket shelves, compared to only 0.2 million tonnes that occurs in supermarket stores. Based on Sainsbury's market share, this means Sainsbury's supply chain waste could be roughly 790,000 tonnes - over 20 times as much as its in-store waste. And far less of this is redistributed to charities. Please #stoptherot!
Let's lift the lid on industry food waste together, so we can see an end to it in the UK!
Keep up the fight against food waste!
