Some inspiration from abroad where we have seen remarkable steps in regulating food waste recently. The US created the Food Recovery Act http://1.usa.gov/1OPZOfD to halve food waste by 2025; French government stood up to the food industry to demand charitable redistribution of food, and prison for non-compliance! bit.ly/1TDu7Hi
Now it's the UKs turn, and 200,000 of us can be heard!
After meeting with Tesco and Sainsbury's over the Christmas period it is clear that our supermarkets are making efforts to reduce waste through their supply chains, but not nearly enough to deal with the mountains of waste created at farm and manufacturing level. Your MPs voice could be the steer that these companies need to make radical changes.
The Food Waste (Reduction) Bill offers a chance to push these businesses to act up on waste, simliarly to Stop the Rot, the bill calls for:
- 30% reduction in food waste by 2025
- Transparent reporting on waste in retail supply chains
- Fair redistribution according to the food waste hierarchy
Urge your MP to take this massive chance to act up on waste.
