The Issue

I've always been an animal lover, and it breaks my heart every time I see a lifeless body on the road, a victim of our fast-paced lives and inattentiveness. Cats, foxes, dogs, and so many other animals fall prey to the dangers of traffic. They may not have a voice, but I believe it's our responsibility to speak up for them, to champion for their safety and right to live freely without the threat of unnecessary harm.

In the UK alone, it is estimated that every day, thousands of wild and domestic animals are killed on roads. This isn't just an issue of inconvenience or unsightly scenes; it's a significant loss to our biodiversity and a stark reminder of our impact on the environment. Roadkill incidents contribute to the decline of various species, with animals like hedgehogs seeing significant population drops partly due to being run over.

But change is possible. By implementing wildlife corridors and animal crossings, such as those in European countries like the Netherlands, where animal underpasses and green bridges have proven successful, we can reduce these preventable deaths. Installing warning signs in high-risk areas and reducing speed limits in wildlife-heavy zones can further protect our beloved animals.

I urge local city councils and transport authorities to take immediate action by conducting thorough assessments to identify high-risk areas and subsequently implement these life-saving infrastructures. Additionally, engaging communities through educational campaigns can raise awareness about this critical issue and inspire collective responsibility.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand to preserve wildlife, protect domestic animals, and foster a safer coexistence between humans and animals. Please join me in making our roads a safer place for our cherished animal companions.
