Stop the Road Through Kilcona Dog Park

The Issue

Every day, my dog and I visit Kilcona Dog Park in Winnipeg. It has become a sanctuary for us, a place where my high-energy dog can explore, run, and find the enrichment she needs to stay happy and healthy. We explore different parts of the park on every visit, sometimes covering the entire area in one day. This diverse and open environment is vital for her well-being, and for many other dogs who use the park.

But now, this precious space is under threat. The city of Winnipeg plans to close off half of Kilcona Dog Park to construct a road. Such a development means losing significant off-leash areas where dogs can roam freely. For many of our beloved pets, reducing this space could be detrimental to their physical and mental health. Each dog has unique needs, and for some, the ability to explore, run, and engage with their surroundings is essential for thriving.

Kilcona Dog Park is not merely about recreation; it's about fostering community and providing a safe haven for our pets. Many residents, including myself, rely on the park as a place where our dogs can interact naturally without restrictions. Transforming parts of it into road will not only restrict their freedom but also disrupt the community bond that the park nurtures.

Consider the impact on the local ecosystem and how fewer off-leash areas would affect dog owners who visit from every corner of the city. Before moving forward, it's crucial to explore alternative routes or solutions that preserve the integrity of Kilcona Dog Park. Expanding infrastructure shouldn't mean compromising our green spaces and the communities they support.

Please join me in urging the city of Winnipeg to reconsider this plan and protect Kilcona Dog Park. By signing this petition or contacting local North Kildonan Council member for  Jeff Browaty at 204-986-5196 or email jbrowaty@winnipeg.ca , you're standing up for a space that supports the well-being of our dogs and the cohesion of our community. Together, we can ensure that Kilcona remains a thriving place for both dogs and their owners.
