The issue

In our beloved Trowutta, NW Tasmania, (population: 92), our local football ground, a cherished community gathering place, was sold by the Crown to a private buyer from Sydney. This new owner, already having Circular Head Council Planning approval, is going to convert our football ground on six hectares of zoned agricultural land into a visitor accommodation RV & Caravan Park with a capacity of 80 RV's/Caravans.

This change affects not only the fabric of our small community but also will affect our native wildlife via the added roadkill of Tasmanian Devils (endangered), Quolls, Bandicoots, Pademelons, Masked Owls (endangered), Possums, Micro Bats, Hawks & Wallabies that call this area home.

Trowutta is a natural dark corridor for our native wildlife. The proposed RV Park has the only 2 street lights along this section of Trowutta Road.

It is a single lane road with no line marking,100kmph speed limit and already struggles to safely move local farmers livestock between paddocks with the logging trucks and gravel trucks that frequent this road without the projected (council traffic assessment) extra 96 daily trips by RV's and Caravans.

Trowutta has only 92 residents. The residents in the direct view of this proposed RV Park will have their view changed from one of peaceful aggricultural land to one of an RV & Caravan park accommodating 80 RV's and Caravans. There will be no more dark corridor of silence for native wildlife at night. No more peace & quiet for the mostly farming residents who live here and who already struggle with the daily roadkill.

Trowutta has no town sign, no post office, no petrol, no pub, no shops what so ever. We have a small, family owned & run timber mill. The Circular Head Council affords us twice monthly bin collection and have ignored all of our pleas to reduce the speed limit here to protect the wildlife and farm livestock. This RV & Caravan Park is sheer exploitation of Trowutta for potential tourist dollars.

On June 20th 2024 Trowutta residents attended the Circular Head Council meeting armed with 30 signatures against this proposal, gave personal passionate statements on how this will affect not only our lives but native wildlife and public safety with the condition of the road that we all know too well. This fell on deaf ears and Council unanimously voted to approve this development. Their planning officer stated that our concerns for the native wildlife and our own peaceful existence were not planning issues. Trowutta will be forever changed and damaged for no other reason but projected tourism dollars.

Our call is loud and clear. We strongly urge the local council to reconsider their approval given to the RV park project. It's time to rally behind the preservation of our native wildlife & agricultural zoning, and in turn, keep the peaceful identity of Trowutta intact.
