Stop the Renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America"

Stop the Renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America"
The Issue
Around the world, we use Google, Apple, and their many services in a wide variety of activities like finding recipes, finding a quick, accurate, and clarifying answer to a problem, conducting research, and even to use as a GPS. All these activities require that this information to be both factual and representative of standards. Before the beginning of his second term as President of the United States of America, Donald Trump touted on renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Furthermore, as of February 11, 2025, Google has officially proceeded with renaming the gulf - likely under pressure and influence from the President. Much of the country and the world has seen this as widely inappropriate - not only does it not solve any of the fundamental issues in the United States like rising living costs, but it raises concerns on the misrepresentation of world geography that can further misinformation.
The world has already seen instances of misrepresentative geographical and cultural name changes. One recent example is Russia and Vladimir Putin's renaming of key towns and roads in Ukraine. Such changes are intended to eliminate the original cultural identity of the area, and renaming the Gulf of Mexico by one of the most prominent Internet-centric companies can lead to similar instances in the United States. Should a company with such a wide-reach and user-base so easily succumb to political pressure to rename a body of water, one begs to question: What else could politicians like Donald Trump force Google and other companies to change out of cultural and political spite? Such changes undermine the truth and facts we rely on to function and act in our daily lives.
Thus, it is imperative that action be taken now to send a clear and strong message that:
- Large companies like Google and Apple have an ethical responsibility and obligation to present factual and representative information - especially as it can be accessible by BILLIONS of people.
- People and corporations alike must remain affirm to keep factual information relevant for this generation and several more to come despite any attempts to the contrary from political opportunists.
- Attempts at national praise, glory, and fame should be done through action that directly helps the people - not through vain acts that alters or eliminates the facts from the people.
I humbly ask you to sign this petition to set the precedent to prioritize factual information and representation over bending the knee to political pressure. In the long run, this prioritization will help improve the livelihoods of people around the world.
