At Thursday’s council meeting, 17 city councillors ignored the wishes of their constituents and rammed through the renaming of Dundas Square and a so-called “operational plan.”
Pat Tobin of the Economic Development and Culture Division admitted under questioning that there was no public consultation. The CFO also could not guarantee public money wouldn’t be used for various “re-education” costs for the 2025 budget. They also removed “sponsorships” from the plan potentially leaving millions of dollars on the table.
Councilor Bradford put forth a motion to divert the Section 37 funds to be used for the signage and other costs for square beautification, and was rebuked by Council.
Mayor Chow repeated revisionist talking points about Henry Dundas, and Councilor Saxe expressed “great reluctance” yet STILL voted to proceed.
However the most shameful display of the day was Councillor Carroll who projected her “white guilt” onto all of us and then proceeded to call ALL OF US racist. We, the taxpayers should not bear the burden of her personal emotional struggles. It was shameful, and this council is rapidly losing the support of the people.

Every councillor voted to push this against the wishes of the people EXCEPT Councillors Holyday, Bradford, Nunziata, Burnside, Khandavel and Crisanti. They showed common sense and principle. We thank them. The vote was 17-6.
We are still awaiting Chris Moise’s apology for calling Daniel Tate a racist at the Executive Committee. We’re not holding our breath.
Keep spreading the word about this shameful chapter in Toronto history and we will have more updates soon. Onward!
