Stop the Renaming of Aiken Regional Airport
The Issue
The character of Aiken, SC, is like no other small Southern city -- a unique mix of rich history and forward-thinking innovation. This character is embodied and exemplified in our public spaces and institutions. However, the recent and ongoing effort by some in our community to rename our AIKEN REGIONAL AIRPORT after the late Senator Lindsey Graham threatens this identity dramatically and unnecessarily, and with far-reaching and potentially serious negative consequences.
POLITICAL DIVISION: If implemented, this name change would divide our community by attaching the name of a polarizing political figure to a municipal institution. Despite his influence, Sen. Graham did not hail from Aiken and did not call this area home. Our airport should be a place that is hospitable to all, a place that reflects our welcoming culture rather than endorsing political figures. The potential negative economic effects of renaming our airport may be especially significant during heavy seasonal travel each spring.
SAFETY IMPLICATIONS: Renaming our airport would pose potential safety risks. Changing the name of an airport requires pilots and airlines to update their flight plans and databases, leading to confusion and potentially dangerous or even life-threatening situations. The name AIKEN REGIONAL AIRPORT is well known to the community and to frequent visitors, and maintaining that name is crucial in ensuring continued safe air travel operations. This is especially true since the AIKEN REGIONAL AIRPORT is an "uncontrolled" (or non-towered) airport, meaning there is no air traffic controller to help respond to pilot inquiries about airport identity.
EROSION OF AIKEN'S BRAND: From an economic and branding perspective, our AIKEN REGIONAL AIRPORT is an essential gateway to our city. Aiken has worked hard to build its brand as a prime destination for business and tourism. Changing the airport's name would dilute this identity and confuse potential visitors and investors. Maintaining the recognition of our AIKEN REGIONAL AIRPORT plays a significant role in continuing to attract attention and investment to Aiken.
SUMMARY: Renaming our airport is not just a matter of changing a sign; it involves erasing a part of our community's identity and planting new seeds of division, not to mention the significant cost to taxpayers. Aiken deserves leaders who prioritize the community's cohesive spirit over individual recognition. If Sen. Graham deserves a memorial designation, it could be the airport terminal, for example, as this would not erode Aiken's brand or create operational confusion.
Please join me in urging the Aiken City Council to dismiss these unnecessary renaming plans and leave the name of our AIKEN REGIONAL AIRPORT unchanged.
