Stop the relocation of Skaneateles Park Maintenance facility to Austin Park Pavilion

Stop the relocation of Skaneateles Park Maintenance facility to Austin Park Pavilion
The Issue
As a community of concerned residents who deeply care for the beauty and safety of our village and parks. On behalf of our families, friends and generations to come we have collectively taken our voice to a public platform to openly express, from the residents’ perspective, matters concerning the Skaneateles Town Board’s decision on the project impacting Austin Park and the village residents.
Our overall objective is to inform the Skaneateles community and general public on the details, important issues and concerns around the Town’s proposed project. Specifically stop the relocation of the Park Maintenance facility, equipment and the commercial/municipal use from Fennel Street to the Austin Park Pavilion - to a park and residential zone where kids play, community spends recreational time, and residential homes are located.
Our goal is to shed light on proposed project details that may not have been openly or clearly presented to the residents. We are concerned over:
- The safety - the commercial/municipal facility’s impact on pedestrian, kids, recreational safety.
- Perceived Community Value - impact on how our neighborhood and Skaneateles community may appear with a commercial/municipal building visibly located
- Aesthetics - partial conversion of the open-air pavilion to a maintenance facility, permanently housing municipal equipment, will significantly change the aesthetics of the building and area around it.
- Preservation of the community pavilion - the pavilion is unique to the park and community of Skaneateles, housing a number of long standing events including Father’s Day pancake breakfast, Fireman’s Field days and summer day camp.
- Impact on our taxes - the initial proposal to upgrade the park (pavilion and other enhancements) was estimated to cost close to $15M and would have a tax impact range of $35-$69 per $100K of assessed value.
