Stop the relocation of Colonial Heights Animal Shelter

We are the SPCA of Petersburg and Colonial Heights. As avid animal lovers and volunteers, we have witnessed firsthand the positive impact this facility has had on both the animals and our community. It is not just a shelter; it is a sanctuary for our beloved animals, a beacon of hope for strays, and a testament to the compassionate spirit of Colonial Heights.
In 2018, significant improvements were made to our shelter, thanks to the combined efforts of the City of Colonial Heights, the SPCA, and generous individual contributions. A total of approximately $378,000 was invested, which included a $200,000 commitment from the City, $50,000 from the SPCA, and a heartfelt $128,000 donation from an individual. These funds were dedicated to a new 30-year roof and modern facilities designed to provide the highest standard of care for the animals.
The current location of the shelter was chosen not just for its ideal accessibility to local residents, but also for the community’s connection to it. It is a sanctuary nestled within our city, where families come to adopt forever friends and volunteers dedicate their time to make a difference. Moving the shelter would dismantle this hub of community spirit, causing disruptions not only to the animals’ wellbeing but also to the passionate volunteers and staff who have long supported it.
Furthermore, relocating the shelter minimizes accessibility for many of the residents and negates the previous investment efforts. This is not just about a change of address; it is about keeping our beloved animals and their caregivers in a place that feels like home and serves them best.
