STOP THE RELENTLESS DESTRUCTION OF MELBOURNE’S GREEN WEDGES
The issue
WHY SIGN THIS PETITION?
Thank you to the thousands of people who have already signed this petition in support of Melbourne’s Green Wedges. Every signature brings us one step closer to securing their permanent protection.
Our aim is to reach 10,000 signatures by 30 September 2026.
We need your signature to help raise awareness of the growing threats to our rural landscapes and strengthen our community’s fight to protect Melbourne’s unique and irreplaceable Green Wedges from destruction and fragmentation.
Our Green Wedges are under increasing threat from inappropriate development, weak planning legislation and pressure to permit urban uses in rural zones.
Every large-scale, inappropriate development can damage our scenic rural landscapes, agricultural land, native vegetation, wildlife and habitats, and rural and cultural heritage. It can also set a precedent for further encroachment of urban development into rural zones - gradually eroding the very qualities our Green Wedges were established to protect.
WHY ARE OUR GREEN WEDGES SO IMPORTANT?
Melbourne’s Green Wedges are a vital part of our city’s identity. These designated non-urban areas provide space for conservation, agriculture, tourism, recreation and other essential rural uses. They are the lungs and food bowl of our city, home to important landscapes and wildlife, and a vital buffer against unchecked urban sprawl.
We are deeply grateful to the 1970s Hamer Government for the visionary planning and legislation which, for over half a century, has safeguarded these irreplaceable green spaces and profoundly shaped the way Melburnians live and connect with the natural environment. Credit must also go to the Bracks Government, which introduced new Green Wedge zones and an Urban Growth Boundary in 2003.
Melbourne’s Green Wedges were envisaged to protect our rural, agricultural, cultural and environmental heritage. They were not conceived to become convenient open spaces awaiting 21st-century urban needs.
Please help us preserve our Green Wedges to ensure that future generations can benefit from our unique and diverse natural environment.
We cannot afford to lose this legacy.
WHAT ARE THE THREATS?
We are not anti-development — we are pro-appropriate development. We support the vision and values of the original Green Wedge legislation, which stipulated that Green Wedge land be retained for uses that cannot be accommodated within urban or industrial areas, such as agriculture, rural enterprises, nature conservation and more.
We oppose large-scale urban developments that are inappropriate for Green Wedge land, as well as the many uses and activities threatening our Green Wedges, including illegal rubbish dumping and contaminated landfill operations.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
It is only by campaigning to protect Melbourne’s Green Wedges as a whole that we can stem the relentless tide of inappropriate development proposals threatening these irreplaceable areas. Opposing individual development proposals is important, but it cannot, on its own, secure the long-term protection of our Green Wedges for future generations.
Protecting Melbourne’s Green Wedges is a shared responsibility. Lasting success depends on communities, landowners, applicants, councils and governments working together through collaboration, responsible planning and improved planning policies that both safeguard our Green Wedges and ensure that appropriate land is allocated for the essential infrastructure our growing communities require.
Please sign this petition to call on all levels of government to:
- Stop inappropriate development in Green Wedge areas, including commercial and industrial expansion, the dumping of so-called clean fill, and urban uses such as schools, places of worship and contractors’ depots.
- Strengthen and enforce legislation to permanently protect Green Wedge land for future generations.
- Close loopholes in planning provisions that allow the exploitation of Green Wedge and conservation zones.
- Support sustainable land use, such as conservation, agriculture, biodiversity protection and open-air recreation.
