Capri-Sun has launched a petition to bring back recyclable plastic straws, presenting it as an environmental solution. But we say: This is not progress, it’s a step backward!

Plastic, whether recyclable or not, remains a problem for our environment. Even the most recyclable plastics strain the recycling system, pollute our oceans, and contribute to the creation of microplastics that enter our food chain. The reintroduction of plastic straws is not a solution for environmental protection—it’s a cosmetic move to create the illusion of sustainability while ignoring the core issue.

Why should we stop this development?

1. Plastic is still plastic: Even recyclable plastic straws are part of the global plastic problem. Too often, plastic ends up in the environment or in landfills, despite being recyclable, because many recycling systems are inefficient. We need less plastic, not just “better” plastic!
2. The threat of microplastics: Over time, plastic breaks down into tiny particles called microplastics, which enter the environment and have serious impacts on ecosystems and human health. Recyclable plastic straws do not prevent this problem.
3. Capri-Sun's greenwashing: Instead of investing in truly sustainable alternatives like compostable materials or reusable solutions, Capri-Sun is attempting to sell the return of plastic as environmental progress. This is a clear case of greenwashing—a superficial action meant to mislead eco-conscious consumers.
4. A missed opportunity for real innovation: Companies should be investing in sustainable, long-term solutions. By sticking with plastic, Capri-Sun is neglecting the potential for forward-thinking packaging solutions. We demand real innovation that removes plastic from our environment—not just an “improved” version of the current problem.

Our demands:

• No more plastic straws, recyclable or not! Capri-Sun should find real alternatives to single-use plastics that protect both the environment and consumers alike.
• More transparency, less greenwashing! Companies need to be honest about their environmental actions and stop using cosmetic changes to present themselves as sustainable.
• Invest in plastic-free innovations! Capri-Sun and other companies should invest in materials that are compostable, biodegradable, or reusable to truly combat plastic pollution in the long term.
