A wise person once told me it’s always good to look at things from different angles.
This photo shows one side of the peace pole which was installed in Rankin Gardens several years ago by the then Mayor of the City of Subiaco.
How ironic that the City is now planning to demolish these peaceful gardens to create an outdoor concert venue for “major community events”. The City says it expects these events to have upwards of 400 people. They’ll all be crammed into a relatively small space. The beautiful rose garden will be dug up and replaced by a “festival lawn”, with a stage, stage lighting, terrace seating and concrete paving all around for food trucks and the like. With that many people and multiple events, how long before the festival lawn becomes the festival sandpit?
From any angle, the use of Rankin Gardens for this purpose is an insult to the people who have created and maintained these beautiful gardens over many, many years.
The City’s plan is a sheer waste of money when there are two outdoor events spaces already in place at Subiaco Theatre Gardens (290 metres away) and Market Square (1100 metres away).
And it will destroy a peaceful, public green space in the middle of our built-up urban environment.
Time is running out. The City’s public consultation period for its Civic Precinct project ends on 27 February. Please keep sharing this petition with family, friends, colleagues, neighbours - anyone, anywhere. There is no need to pay and no need to live locally.
Only 13 to go before we reach 650 signatures - let’s keep going!
Thank you so much. I’m very grateful for your continuing support.
