Stop the reconfiguring of North Hill elementary schools in the Puyallup School District

We wish for both Northwood Elementary and Mt. View Elementary to return to a K-6 school and passionately disapprove of the idea of turning Mt. View Elementary strictly into a preschool and kindergarten school, while Northwood would become a 1st through 5th grade school.

The bond which passed on November 3rd, 2015 was for a new K-6 Northwood Elementary. The taxpayers did not pass the bond for a preschool and reconfiguring the schools. Per the News Tribune, the Puyallup School District failed four times to pass a bond dating back to 2004. The video posted on YouTube on August 6th, 2015 by the Puyallup School District states “…careful use of taxpayer dollars.” By changing the intended use of the bond and not considering voters concerns, the Puyallup School District may be in jeopardy of not passing another bond for another 11 years.

Many families are moving into the Northwood Elementary and the Mt. View Elementary communities. By reconfiguring the schools, families with multiple students will be broken apart, thus making it difficult for families to be involved in their children’s education. Families along with the Puyallup School District will also need to take transportation into consideration. Buses have already been a concern this year with a shortage of bus drivers causing buses to be 30-60 minutes late to and from school. Having children at multiple schools will make things increasingly difficult for working parents and caregivers.

Northwood Elementary and Mt. View Elementary both currently have a peer mentorship program in their respective schools. If the reconfiguration takes place, then this program will become difficult to offer efficiently and effectively. The National Association of Elementary School Principals website states that, “At-risk students who have a mentor in their lives are more likely to graduate high school and attend college than those who do not…” Not only will the Kindergartners not have a peer role model, but also the older students will not have anyone to look up to them.

We do not feel that adding a pay to play preschool will benefit our community that already has several well-established successful preschools. Adding a preschool to Mt. View Elementary or Northwood Elementary is not a priority and would only add more students to our growing schools. If overcrowding is a concern then the Puyallup School District should effectively reevaluate their decision to add another grade level to the schools. For instance, a preschool would be better placed in a higher needs elementary school in Region 3 where the learning gap is larger in Kindergarten students.

Currently Northwood Elementary and Mt. View Elementary are the only schools being reconfigured by the Puyallup School District. These two schools are being used by the Puyallup School District as a test case for future reconfiguration of other district schools. The Puyallup School District has not publically shared any positives, nor has any research been provided showing that the reconfiguration will benefit and improve the education of our children.

We hope that you will listen to our concerns and respect our wishes as a community to not reconfigure our schools and to return Northwood Elementary and Mt. View Elementary back to a K-6 school!
