The survey numbers say it all.
88 % of ordinary Norwegians do not want Islam Net's Dawah Center. Over 8000 people entered the survey on Nettavisen, considered a left-leaning paper.
When Islam Net's plans for an Islamic Dawah Center and Mosque became known about two years ago, politicians from the left, right, and middle were outraged.
There was shock and fury and calls from all politicians to stop the project.
Everyone on both sides agreed, which is unusual today in Norway's political climate. The Oslo City councilor came out strongly against the purchase and wanted to contact the Minister of Justice about the matter.
A politician from the Red Party thought it was life-threatening:
"Either they have tricked people from whom they have collected money to finance a mosque, or they are lying to the media that they will not build a mosque.
"Moreover, the politician said that attracting young people with relaxing activities such as billiards and computer games is a recipe for radicalization."
"I expect that a majority of the politicians in Oslo will take action to stop establishing such a place."
A politician from the Progressive Party said: "This is an extreme organization. We cannot sit idly by and watch them expand and establish themselves. We must fight against it."
Another politician who is Muslim feared that Islam Net had different thoughts about its "youth activities" than the rest of society.
"Further radicalization. It is not Norwegian values that are at the center. They use democracy and freedom of speech to reduce equality and abolish gay rights. It is vulnerable young people who find solutions and seek out such organizations. That should worry us all."
Many others chimed in, and so went the discourse for almost a year - and then there was utter silence. The project is now near completion.
Not one politician wants to talk about it anymore. So nobody knows what happened, and nobody is willing to speak up.
That is the reason for our petition. If our politicians are not willing to act, we must.
Seeing the supporters' enthusiasm shows our Norwegian people's deep concern for this project.
Thank you very much to everyone! Please share with those you know.
