Just the other day I heard the news about the proposal for a slaughter and meat processing facility in our beloved community on the east portion Jacksonville, AR. It shocked me, knowing that David's Burgers plans to place such an establishment in our residential community. Our quality of life is at stake, and we cannot stay silent.

First and foremost, the environmental impact of such a facility cannot be overstated. The construction and operation of slaughterhouses are known to contribute significantly to air and water pollution, as highlighted by multiple studies, even with rendering taking place offsite. A report by the Environmental Integrity Project states that these facilities are among the top polluters of American waterways, releasing high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus that can lead to dead zones in aquatic ecosystems like Bayou Meto.

Additionally, this facility may pose serious health risks to residents in the neighborhood. Increased traffic from transporting livestock and waste, potential odors, and noise pollution can disrupt our community's peace. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly flagged the risks of zoonotic diseases and other infectious agents that could emerge from improperly managed processing facilities.

Beyond environmental concerns, there's also an economic angle to consider. this area of Jacksonville is a charming and nurturing place for families and small businesses. The urban sprawl associated with a large facility like this could deter potential residents and businesses from choosing this community, affecting property values and local economy sustainability.

Our local wildlife and natural landscapes, which we all deeply cherish, could face irreparable damage as well. Wildlife corridors broken up by development and pollution can lead to a loss of biodiversity, as pointed out by conservation experts from the National Geographic Society.

This facility does not align with the vision we have for our community. We envision a Jacksonville that prioritizes sustainability, the health of its residents, and the preservation of our natural surroundings.

I support David’s Burgers in their effort, but let's urge David’s Burgers and local authorities to reconsider this proposal in a residentially zoned area. There are more suitable locations for such a facility that won't jeopardize the welfare of an existing community. Instead, let's advocate for projects that enhance our town, projects that bring us together and ensure a brighter future for all who call Jacksonville home.
