Stop the proposed screen time limit for children under 16
The Issue
Growing up in today’s digital world is pretty awesome because it lets us discover so many interests and learn new skills right from home. One of my favorite platforms is YouTube. It’s not just for fun – it’s a place where I can learn and really understand myself better.
For a lot of us kids, YouTube is a game-changer. It gives us tools to explore hobbies and passions. Personally, I’ve been able to dive deep into music and dance through the tons of dance practice videos available. Plus, YouTube is packed with educational videos that help me learn about languages, psychology, and even ways to take care of our mental health.
Now, there’s a big proposal in the US to limit screen time for kids under 16 to just one hour a day. This is a huge deal! This rule doesn’t just cut down our screen time; it also takes away opportunities for us to engage in fun and educational activities that really matter for our growth and well-being. YouTube isn’t just a way to waste time; it’s a super useful place for learning new things, especially for those of us who might not have as many resources available outside of the internet.
Research shows that instead of cutting off screen time, we need to focus on how to use it wisely. The American Academy of Pediatrics points out that kids should have access to good content that not only entertains but also educates us. Plus, studies from the Pew Research Center show that social media can be a huge support and learning opportunity during our growing years.
Instead of strict limits, let’s make it easier for parents to help guide our media usage. If they had tools and resources to teach us about using media wisely, along with personalized schedules that fit our needs, it would be way more effective!
Let’s come together and talk to policymakers about this. We should push for smarter solutions that help us use technology in a way that boosts our learning and growth instead of taking it away from us. Join me by signing this petition to support thoughtful rules that keep our access to valuable resources open. Together, we can ensure that every young person has a chance to learn and grow in this digital age!
