Stop the proposed roundabouts at the Route 9 & Bordentown Avenue interchange in Parlin, NJ
The Issue
The residents of Sayreville deserve transportation improvements that prioritize safety, transparency, neighborhood preservation, and quality of life — not a massive roadway expansion that could permanently damage our community.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is proposing a major reconstruction project at the intersection of Route 9, Bordentown Avenue, Burlew Place, Eugene Boulevard, and Kenneth Avenue in Sayreville. The current proposal would replace the existing roadway configuration with multiple roundabouts, roadway realignments, widened lanes, new ramps, and additional traffic infrastructure.
While NJDOT claims the project is intended to improve safety and traffic flow, many residents fear the long-term consequences will far outweigh the benefits. Local homeowners have already voiced concerns about possible property displacement, increased traffic volumes through residential neighborhoods, reduced neighborhood accessibility, environmental impacts, noise pollution, and the destruction of the character of the Kenneth Avenue and Bordentown Avenue area.
This proposal raises serious concerns including:
- Potential displacement of families and long-time residents.
- Increased traffic congestion near residential streets.
- Safety concerns involving large roundabouts and merging traffic patterns.
- Reduced walkability and neighborhood accessibility
- Increased noise and air pollution.
- Loss of community identity and neighborhood stability.
- Lack of meaningful public engagement before advancing the project.
Residents should not be forced to sacrifice their homes and quality of life for a highway redesign that many believe will primarily benefit through-traffic rather than the local community.
According to NJDOT project materials, the interchange area already experiences visibility and traffic pattern challenges, but the proposed solution involves extensive roadway widening and major structural changes that many residents feel are excessive for a residential-adjacent area.
We are calling on NJDOT, Middlesex County officials, and Sayreville leadership to:
- Halt the current proposal immediately.
- Conduct a full independent traffic and environmental review.
- Explore less invasive alternatives.
- Protect residents from displacement.
- Increase transparency and community involvement.
- Hold in-person public forums with meaningful resident input before any approvals move forward.
Sayreville residents deserve smart infrastructure solutions that improve safety without destroying neighborhoods and displacing families.
Please sign this petition to demand that NJDOT reconsider this project and work WITH the community — not against it.
Together, we can protect the future of Sayreville.
